LINA M. MAROUF, MD

Dr. Marouf has been in private practice since 1993. She understands patients concerns, fears, and the need to help them understand their medical challenges related to their eyes. As vice president of Retina Associates of South Texas, PA, she is dedicated to providing excellence in patient care. Dr. Marouf is a board certified diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academic of Ophthalmology, and a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists. 

Education and Training~
Dr. Marouf began her career in ophthalmology as a full time clinical professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1989. She received her medical degree from American University of Beirut in Lebanon, and completed a residency in ophthalmology and fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at Texas Tech University. She has participated in multiple, nationwide clinical trials involving macular degeneration, intraocular tumors and retinopathy of prematurity. Dr. Marouf has been named among “Best Doctors in America,” for several years running.

Personal Notes~
Dr. Marouf is married to Timothy P. Cleland, MD, and has two children, Sami and Rea. She is fluent in English, Arabic, French, and medical Spanish. Dr. Marouf enjoys being a full-time physician, wife, and mother. Her interests include traveling, home decorating, cooking, and reading.


TIMOTHY P. CLELAND, MD., M.S.E.

Dr. Cleland is co-founder and President of Retina Associates of South Texas, PA, established in 1996. A board certified diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he is skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of macular degeneration, vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity and intraocular tumors. Dr. Cleland also is a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists and holds an academic appointment as clinical associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Education and Training~
A graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, Dr. Cleland majored in electrical engineering. He was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, the National Electrical Engineer Honor Society. After receiving his bachelor of science degree, he entered the master’s degree program in biomedical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and was graduated in 1986.
Dr. Cleland pursued his medical training at Texas Tech University, where he graduated with a medical degree in 1990. He then completed an internship in internal medicine and a three-year residency in ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Cleland received  his fellowship training in vitreo-retinal surgery at the Oschner Clinic in New Orleans, in 1995. Today, he continues to research and study new techniques and procedures in vitreo-retinal surgery to ensure the best quality service for his patients. Dr. Cleland has been named among “Best Doctors in America,” several years running.

Personal Notes~
Dr. Cleland was born in Syracuse, New York. Many of his family members still reside there. He is a licensed instrument-rated pilot and holds a single pilot type rating in a Citation Mustang. Dr. Cleland is married to Lina M. Marouf, MD, vice president of Retina Associates of South Texas, PA. Together, they have two children, Sami and Rea.


Juan E. Rubio Jr., MD

Dr. Rubio originally practiced at Retina Associates of South Texas, P.A. from July 2002 to July 2005 before returning to New Orleans where he served as a clinical assistant professor in the Retina Service of the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans.  He later joined the Ochsner Medical Center, Department of Ophthalmology working as a staff physician in the Retina-Vitreous Section.  While working at LSU and Ochsner, he had the privilege of training several outstanding ophthalmology fellows, residents, medical students, and technicians.

Education and Training~
A native of El Salvador, Dr. Rubio moved to New Orleans in 1980.  Dr. Rubio received both his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and his Master of Science degree in Biostatistics from Tulane University, and his medical degree from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1996.  He subsequently completed a preliminary medicine internship and ophthalmology residency at Ochsner.  He completed his retina/vitreous fellowship with the world renowned Dr. Steve Charles in Memphis, Tennessee.

Personal Notes~
Dr. Rubio enjoys spending time with his wife Ileana and his daughter, Analisa.  His interests include listening to music and watching spectator sports including the LSU Tigers and the New Orleans Saints football teams.  Dr. Rubio is also fluent in both written and spoken Spanish.
 
 


Enchun M. Liu, MD

Dr. Liu joined Retina Associates of South Texas, P.A. in August 2015.  Dr. Liu is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous.  Dr. Liu has trained with preeminent leaders in the field and brings a deep knowledge and strong skill set in the management of the most complex retinal cases.  Dr. Liu has been involved in many clinical trials and has published articles and videos on innovative surgical techniques.  His areas of interest include age-related macular degeneration, surgical management of subretinal hemorrhages, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, surgical management of macular holes and epiretinal membranes, retinal vascular disease, and uveitis.

Education and Training~
Dr. Liu received his undergraduate degree from the Business Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he graduated cum laude and was elected into the distinguished Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society. Dr. Liu completed his ophthalmology residency training at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he also served as Chief Resident.  He then completed a surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at The Retina Institute in St. Louis, Missouri, one of the premier fellowship programs in the country.

Personal Notes~
